Hilltop Manufacturing Blog/ Land Roller/Prototyping & Design Changes On Our Tri Plex Land Roller

How does a product development change from prototyping to production?

Here is a side by side picture of our first Tri Plex prototype along side the production model Tri Plex. There is a massive difference...

The purpose of the first prototype is to test the idea. Does the blade work on this design? Is the frame heavy enough? Do the hydraulics work as expected? Electrical?

As it turned out, our first prototype worked incredibly well. Once the testing has been completed, designs start changing. There is a balance between usefulness and cost and with the Tri Plex, upgrading and redesigning the hydraulic system was done.

The new system is more expensive but offers a potentially longer life span and this design is more serviceable.

ELECTRICAL

All the electrical wires run into gang bars, allowing for easer access and potential repair. This design is simple, allowing anyone to work on the system in the event of a failure.

HYDRAULIC

The manifold box now has stainless steel pipe instead of rubber. This steel pipe does not touch any other hose or part which means there are no wear points. The organization of the system makes it easy to trace and troubleshoot if needed.

HYDRAULIC VALVES

The valves on the production model are upgraded as well, valves now come with a manual over ride. If power from the tractor fails and there is still hydraulic pressure, a user can still operate the valves. Even in the event of a complete electrical failure!

SEALED COMPONENTS

The upgraded system includes a bulkhead design. This allows the manifold box to be sealed, protecting the components within the box.

Besides the advantages of the upgrade, it looks incredible. There is something to be said for how the machine looks!
