LAND ROLLERS

What to Know Before Buying a Land Roller in Alberta
Land rollers are a long-term investment — most quality units last 15–20 years with minimal maintenance. Here's what to consider before buying:

1. Field size and terrain
For fields under 400 acres, a 16'–18' roller is typically sufficient. For larger quarter-sections or multi-field operations, a swing-hitch or tri-plex roller dramatically reduces time per acre.

2. Fixed hitch vs. swing hitch
Fixed hitch rollers are simpler, lower cost, and reliable for straightforward field work. Swing hitch rollers rotate lengthwise for easier transport and are better suited for farmers moving between multiple fields or navigating tight yard gates.

3. Drum size and fill weight
Hilltop rollers use 42" diameter drums made from 1/2" pipe — these are heavy-duty by design. Drums are sealed and can be filled with water to add additional weight for pushing those rocks into the ground.

4. The leveling blade
Not all land rollers come with a blade. Hilltop's hydraulic spring-mounted blade is specifically designed to float across the surface — it knocks down mole hills and fills ruts without digging into healthy sod.

5. Frame finish and longevity
Cheaper rollers use painted frames that rust quickly in Alberta's moisture. Hilltop rollers use a sand-blasted, powder-coated finish for maximum corrosion resistance and a longer service life.
